The Northwest Nature Desk is the product of a national effort by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) called the Local Journalism Center (LJC) and was instituted in 2011 in Oregon, Idaho, and Washington. The are more than a half dozen LJC's currently organized or in the process of being organized - most have been funded in the southern and eastern portions of the United States.
In Idaho, there are two stations currently participating in the LJC effort or part of the Northwest Nature Desk - Idaho Public Television and Boise State Public Radio. Below is a quick summary written by the folks at Boise State Public Radio.

BOISE, Idaho (BSPR) -- The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has announced funding for two new Local Journalism Centers (LJCs) in the Northwest and Southern regions of the country.
Boise State Public Radio will partner with Puget Sound Public Radio (KUOW), KCTS Television Seattle, Northwest Public Radio/Television, Idaho Public Television and Southern Oregon Public Television to provide in-depth local journalism to the Northwest region. Content from the Local Journalism Center will be distributed through participating stations as well as on regional and national platforms.
With reporters covering the region from Portland, Seattle, Pullman, Boise and Medford, the new center is uniquely positioned to help citizens examine how policies unfold in their backyard and to explore how local actions intersect with national issues. With broadcast and online components, the center will produce daily news coverage, enterprise reporting and community engagement opportunities. Major areas of focus include renewable energy, natural resources, sustainability and environmental science.
Boise State Public Radio will share a news reporter position with Idaho Public Television as part of the LJC project. The position will cover sustainability issues.
